Saturday 13th September – Ferry Lane slipway, Bishopthorpe, York YO23 2SB
Individual starts between 11.00am and 1.00pm – finish by 2.00pm
Canoe “O” is a community fun event on the river for paddlers of all ages and abilities.
A charity event organized by Humbledon Outdoor Activities Association with thanks to Bishopthorpe Parish Council, site owner Phil Cook and many community organizations.
- Take part in a treasure hunt along the beautiful River Ouse in any canoe or paddle board.
- Great fun for children and families in Canadians and doubles as well as single paddlers.
- All paddlers will get a mapof the river showing locations of 25 coloured flags.
- The paddling challenge: how many flags can you find in 60 minutes?
- Skills involved: paddling, map reading, observation, distance judgement, recording.
Presentations at 2.15pm – Annual trophies: 1st and 2nd boats, 1st team (4 counters).
Entry fees: single boats: juniors: £5.00; seniors: £10.00, doubles & crews: £10.00
All entry fees will be used in support of residential activity camps for people with disabilities, organized each year by a team of local volunteers.
Closing date: 1st September.
Late entries: accepted up to and on the day subject to an additional £2 charge.
Canoe “O” scoring and start times:
- Hire dibbers at £1 or bring your own.
- Start any time between 11am and 1pm by dibbing the electronic timing box on the water.
- There will be a different 1st control for each boat, then collect the others in any order
- Record flag numbers by punching or writing on your tally.
- 10 points for each flag recorded.
- Everyone to finish by 2.00pm.
- Download your time back on land.
Time allowed: 60 mins
Time penalty: 5 points deducted for each minute late
Reception and car parking
Unload at river end of Ferry Lane, then drive 200 metres and turn right into the Canoe “O” car park, just beyond the caravan site – plenty of room for all cars, minibuses and trailers.
Important Safety Regulations:
- All participants must wear buoyancy aids.
- All boats must clearly display the event bib and return it with their tally after downloading.
- Most paddlers cross the river many times. Always look and listen for passing motorboats.
- A thorough risk assessment is always carried out but canoeing is an adventure sport and everybody takes part at their own risk.
- If cancelled by river conditions the event will be held on the next suitable weekend
(has never yet happened).
