Grosmont Camp

Summer Camp 2025: Friday 8th – Monday 11th August
Camping at Grosmont is an exciting experience for individuals and groups wanting to try self-sufficient camping, following their own activities and timetable. Any members, friends and families are welcome to join us for all, or part, of the weekend …
HOAA’s campsite is a field on the edge of an extensive area of woodland. There are no facilities apart from a storage hut and an outside cold water tap (for washing only – not drinking quality). It’s a great spot for exploring miles of open countryside. Just a 10-minute walk from Grosmont: toilets, grocery shop, and trains to Whitby and Pickering. For those preferring to stay around the site there are always plenty of interesting maintenance jobs to help with.
Campsite wardens, Paul and Phil, will open the site, and set up outside cooking facilities that everyone can use. All campers need to be fully equipped with their own tents, sleeping bags and enough food and drinking water to last their stay. Limited extra supplies of drinking water may be available but this will need to be boiled for safety.
Grosmont camps are a big step up from staying at residential centres. To save struggling at camp, or finding too late that something has been forgotten campers should prepare by camping out beforehand in your own garden.
For those wanting an even bigger challenge it is possible for backpackers to travel to Grosmont by public transport from Sunderland or York. We have not had reports of any campers travelling by public transport from York but Paul and Charles have done so from Sunderland. Charles has made the journey once, while Paul travels by train with his bike taking the strain of the camping-gear load. Travelling by train or buses can be interesting as both Charles and Paul reported unexpected problems.
Last year’s five campers are all keen to go again – Justin has already signed up for this summer. Campers hoping to travel from Sunderland on the minibus need to contact Dave Thompson (Tel: 073 6869 4283).
There is no charge for camping but please let Dave or Phil know you are coming so we have an indication of numbers. Looking forward to seeing lots of happy campers at Grosmont,

(N.B. Because of the fire risk smoking is not allowed inside any tent.)
